What Does the Spread Mean in Betting? NFL + NBA Guide

Nine and a half points. That's what FanDuel is asking the Jaguars to beat in Baltimore on Thursday Night Football. If you've ever stared at "-9.5" and wondered what it actually asks of your team, this is for you.

Updated Tue Nov 3, 10:30 AM ET with Week 10 NFL and Wednesday NBA lines.

What does the spread mean in betting?

The spread is a head start in points. Sportsbooks hand the underdog a cushion so both sides of the bet look about equally likely. The favorite gets a minus number and has to win by more than that. The underdog gets a plus number and covers if it loses by less than that or wins the game.

That's the whole idea. A moneyline asks "who wins?" The point spread asks "who wins, and by how much?"

Point spread explained with a real line

Here is Thursday's game as FanDuel and BetMGM listed it Tuesday morning:

SideSpreadFanDuelBetMGM
Jacksonville Jaguars-9.5-102-108
Baltimore Ravens+9.5-120-120

Kickoff is Thursday, Nov 5 at 8:15 PM ET. Here is how each bet grades:

  • Jaguars -9.5 wins if Jacksonville wins by 10 or more. A 9-point Jaguars win loses this bet.
  • Ravens +9.5 wins if Baltimore loses by 9 or fewer, or wins outright.

Same game, two very different questions. You can preview the full matchup, with player lines and the defense numbers, on our Jaguars at Ravens game page.

The price next to the spread

The spread is only half of what you see. The number in the second column is the price, and it reads like any other odds price.

  • -102 on Jaguars -9.5 at FanDuel means a $10 bet wins about $9.80.
  • -120 on Ravens +9.5 means a $10 bet wins about $8.33.

Most spreads sit near -110, which works out to a 52.4% implied chance. When one side is pricier, like the Ravens at -120 here, the book is leaning a little that way without moving the number itself. If plus and minus odds still feel fuzzy, our guide to what +500 means covers how to read any price, and no-vig fair odds shows how to strip out the book's cut.

What does cover the spread mean?

"Covering" just means your side beat the number. It has nothing to do with who won the game.

Picture a Jaguars 24-17 win. Jacksonville wins by 7, so the Jaguars won the game but did not cover -9.5. Baltimore lost but covered +9.5. Fans of a 7-point favorite can be furious after a win, and that's why.

What does against the spread mean?

Against the spread, or ATS, is a team's record after the spread is applied. A team that loses three straight as a 7-point underdog by 3 points each time is 0-3 straight up and 3-0 ATS. Analysts use ATS records to show when the market has been too high or too low on a team, but past ATS results on their own don't predict the next game.

Half points, whole numbers and pushes

Notice the ".5" in most spreads? That half point exists so the bet can't tie.

When the spread is a whole number, a tie is possible. Look at Sunday's Broncos at Panthers game (1:00 PM ET): Denver is -3 at FanDuel (-106) and BetMGM (-102). If the Broncos win by exactly 3, that's a push, and a straight bet gets refunded. Lions -7 at Dolphins (FanDuel -105) works the same way on a 7-point Lions win.

In the NFL, 3 and 7 matter more than other numbers because field goals and touchdowns make those margins common. That's why moving from -2.5 to -3.5 costs a lot more than moving from -9.5 to -10.5. If you bet spreads in a parlay, read what happens when a leg pushes or voids first.

What does the spread mean in betting football vs NBA?

The idea is identical in both leagues. The scoring is not.

NFL games move in chunks of 3 and 7, so a half point near those numbers is worth a lot. NBA games score more often and in smaller chunks, so spreads are bigger and no single number carries the same weight. A few of Wednesday's NBA lines on FanDuel:

  • 76ers +1.5 at Pistons (-106), 7:10 PM ET. That's close to a coin flip on the winner.
  • Timberwolves +9.5 at Rockets (-114), 8:40 PM ET.
  • Mavericks +12.5 at Spurs (-108), 9:40 PM ET.

Basketball also brings late-game fouling and garbage-time buckets, which can swing a cover in the last minute even when the winner was settled long before. Our game pages, like Mavericks at Spurs, show the lines and matchup numbers side by side.

Spread vs moneyline

Sometimes the clearest way to see a spread is to put it next to the moneyline for the same game:

Thursday, Jaguars at RavensFanDuel
Jaguars moneyline-480
Jaguars -9.5-102
Ravens moneyline+370
Ravens +9.5-120

Backing Jacksonville to just win costs $48 to win $10. Asking them to win by 10 or more gets you close to even money. The underdog side flips the same way: +370 if Baltimore wins outright, or a much smaller payout for a cushion of 9.5 points.

Alt spreads: moving the number

Books also sell alternate spreads. BetMGM lists the Jaguars at -3 (-350), -7 (-155) and -14 (+165) alongside the main -9.5. A smaller spread is easier to cover and pays less; a bigger one pays more and lands less often. Our alt lines explainer walks through a full ladder.

Before you put a spread on a slip

  • Check the number and the price. Both move during the week, and Tuesday morning lines are not Thursday night lines.
  • Count the hook. In the NFL, a half point across 3 or 7 is worth paying attention to.
  • Know your parlay math. Two spreads at -110 pay about +264 together, and both have to cover. Our how parlays work guide shows the math, and the +500 Hunter builds plus-money parlay combos from current lines.
  • Run the ticket. Slip Surgery reads every leg, shows the implied chance for the full slip and flags the weakest leg.

Frequently asked questions

What does the spread mean in betting?

The spread is a head start the sportsbook gives the underdog. The favorite has to win by more than the number, and the underdog covers if it loses by less than the number or wins outright.

What does cover the spread mean?

A team covers when its result beats the spread. Jaguars -9.5 covers if Jacksonville wins by 10 or more. Ravens +9.5 covers if Baltimore loses by 9 or fewer, or wins.

What does against the spread (ATS) mean?

Against the spread means a team's results measured after the spread is applied, not just wins and losses. A team can lose a game and still be 1-0 ATS if it covered as an underdog.

What happens if the game lands exactly on the spread?

That is a push. On a whole-number spread like Broncos -3, a 3-point Denver win refunds a straight bet. Half-point spreads like -9.5 can't push. In a parlay, a pushed leg usually drops off and the odds shrink.

Is the spread or the moneyline better?

Neither is better on its own. The moneyline only asks who wins, so big favorites cost a lot (Jaguars -480 on FanDuel). The spread asks by how much, so both sides sit near -110. Pick the question you have a real read on.
