Alt Lines Betting Explained: What Alternate Lines Mean and Cost
Main lines are where the book wants the action to split. Alt lines are where you get to move the number yourself. Lower it and the leg gets easier and pays less. Raise it and the leg gets harder and pays more.
Alt lines are one of the most useful tools for building parlays, and one of the easiest to misuse. Here is how they work, with a real FanDuel ladder so you can see the trade-off.
What alt lines are
Every player prop has a main line, the one listed first with prices near -110 on both sides. Alternate lines are the same stat at other numbers.
FanDuel often shows them as milestones: "250+ passing yards" is the same as over 249.5. BetMGM lists them under the alternate markets for each player. Either way, the bet is the same: does the player get past the number?
If the basics of over/under props are new to you, read how player props work first.
A real ladder: Jared Goff passing yards
Here are the FanDuel lines for Jared Goff (Detroit Lions QB) against the Minnesota Vikings, Sun Nov 1 at 1:00 PM ET, captured Fri Oct 30 at 8:58 PM ET. The last column is from his 2026 game logs.
| Line | FanDuel price | Implied chance | Cleared in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over 259.5 (main) | -114 | 53.3% | 5 of 6 |
| Over 249.5 | -148 | 59.7% | 5 of 6 |
| Over 224.5 | -275 | 73.3% | 5 of 6 |
| Over 199.5 | -580 | 85.3% | 6 of 6 |
| Over 174.5 | -1400 | 93.3% | 6 of 6 |
His six 2026 games: 206, 327, 269, 412, 271 and 303 passing yards. The median is 287. BetMGM had his main line at 260.5, within a yard of FanDuel.
Notice what the ladder does. Dropping 35 yards, from 259.5 to 224.5, moves the price from -114 to -275. For his six games, that step did not change how many times he cleared it. The only game under 224.5 was the 206-yard one. That is the honest reality of alt lines: sometimes the cushion matters, often it does not, and you always pay for it. His full log is on his stats page.
What each step costs
On a $10 straight bet:
- 259.5 at -114: win $8.77.
- 249.5 at -148: win $6.76.
- 224.5 at -275: win $3.64.
- 199.5 at -580: win $1.72.
That is why most people do not bet deep alt lines alone. They put them in parlays.
Alt lines inside parlays
Three legs at -275 multiply to about +154. That ticket's implied chance is about 39%, compared with about 14% for three main-line legs at -110 paying +596.
That trade is the whole point: alt lines buy a higher chance and a smaller payout. Where people go wrong is stacking seven or eight heavy alts to get back to +500. Each one is a small risk, but seven small risks add up fast, and every one carries the book's margin. Our guide on how many legs a parlay should have shows how quickly that compounds.
How we use alt lines
A few rules we stick to:
- Start from the median. If the main line already sits well below the player's 5-game and 10-game medians, the main line may be enough. If it sits right at the median, one step down buys real room.
- One step, not five. In a parlay, we usually drop one alt step below the main line, not all the way to the bottom of the ladder.
- Watch the price jump. When one step moves the price a lot, like -148 to -275 above, the book is telling you that range is where most of his games land.
- Check the game script. A big spread raises blowout risk, and a low total means fewer plays. Neither is fixed by a lower line.
Floor Lines does the first step for you. It lists tonight's FanDuel lines, main and alt, that a player cleared in at least 8 of his last 10, with the medians and spread next to each one. Our player stat search shows the same view for any line you type in.
Alt spreads and totals
The same idea works for game lines. A team at -6.5 might be -3.5 at a worse price or -10.5 at a better one. Alt totals let you move the over/under number. The trade is the same: more room means less payout.
Before you bet
Lines move, and alt ladders move with them. Confirm the price on the slip before you place it, and paste the finished ticket into Slip Surgery to see which leg is doing the least work. Model reads only, never locks.
Frequently asked questions
What does alt line mean in betting?
An alt line, or alternate line, is the same bet at a different number than the main line. For a receiver at 68.5 yards, alt lines might be 49.5 or 79.5, each with its own price.
Are alt lines worth it?
Sometimes. A lower alt line gives the leg more room but pays less. It can make sense when the main line sits close to a player's median and you want a cushion, especially inside a parlay.
Why do alt lines pay so little?
Because they are more likely to land. A -580 alt line has an implied chance of about 85%, so the book pays a small amount on top of your stake.
Can you parlay alt lines?
Yes. FanDuel and BetMGM both let you add alt lines to parlays and same game parlays. Stacking several heavy-favorite alts is a common way to build a ticket near even money.
What is an alt spread?
The same idea for a point spread. Instead of a team at -6.5, you might take -3.5 at a worse price or -10.5 at a better one.
