How to fix a parlay with a bad leg
By JB, Slip Surgeon · Updated Oct 26, 2026
You built a slip, then something changed: a player went questionable, a line moved, or you look again and one leg is only there for the payout. Here are your options and what each does to the price.
How to fix a parlay, step by step
- Find the bad leg. Look for the leg that's changed (injury, moved line, started game) or the one with the weakest standalone case.
- Drop it. Removing the leg lowers the payout but raises the slip's chance the most.
- Move it to an alternate line. Keep the player and stat but take a lower number at a shorter price.
- Swap the player or stat. Replace it with a stronger leg, ideally from the same game so the slip keeps its shape.
- Split or bet it straight. If you still like the leg, bet it on its own instead of tying it to the others.
- Re-check and load. Run the new slip through the checker and load it into FanDuel or BetMGM.
The four fixes, with the math
An illustrative 3-leg slip: two legs at −110 and −115, plus a long-shot third leg at +140 that just had bad injury news. Made-up prices, not a pick.
| Fix | Slip | Parlay odds | Implied chance | $10 pays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep it as is | −110, −115, +140 | +757 | 11.7% | $85.66 |
| Swap to a similar-priced leg | −110, −115, −105 | +597 | 14.4% | $69.68 |
| Move to an alternate line | −110, −115, −160 | +480 | 17.2% | $58.00 |
| Drop the leg | −110, −115 | +257 | 28.0% | $35.69 |
Every fix trades payout for a better chance. The right one depends on why the leg was bad. "Implied chance" is the break-even rate behind each payout, not a forecast.
1. Drop the leg
Best when the leg is broken: the player is out or doubtful, the game has started, or you can't find a reason to like it beyond the price. A 2-leg slip pays less, but each leg left is one you chose on purpose.
2. Move to an alternate line
Best when you like the player but the number got away from you. If a points line moved from 24.5 to 26.5, an alternate "25+ points" or "20+ points" keeps the read at a shorter price. Shorter prices mean a smaller payout, and very short alt legs (−300 and beyond) add little to the payout while still able to sink the slip, so don't stack them just to feel safe.
3. Swap the player or stat
Best when the game still looks right but the specific leg doesn't. If a receiver is now questionable, the targets have to go somewhere: a teammate's receptions line or the tight end can carry the same game read. Check the replacement on its own merits; a swap is only better if the new leg has a real case. The +500 Hunter and the NBA and NFL props pages list legs where our model and a second projection agree.
4. Bet it straight, or split the slip
If you like the risky leg and the rest of the slip separately, two smaller bets can make more sense than one fragile one. A straight bet at +140 needs only that leg to land.
Fixing a same game parlay
In a Same Game Parlay, every swap changes how the legs fit together, and the book re-prices the whole thing. After a swap, ask whether the new leg needs the same game script as the others. See same game parlay correlation. On BetMGM, only certain markets can be combined in one game, so a swap can change whether the slip loads as one bet.
Let the checker do it
Upload the slip to the bet slip checker: it flags the leg with the problem, suggests a swap from today's board, and loads the fixed slip into FanDuel or BetMGM.
Frequently asked questions
Can you change a parlay after you place it?
Not in the way this guide describes. Once placed, your options depend on the book: some offer cash out or edit features on some bets. This guide is about fixing the slip before you bet it.
Is it better to drop a leg or swap it?
Drop it when the leg is broken (out, started, no real case). Swap it when the game read still holds and a stronger leg in that game carries it.
Check your own slip
Slip Surgery runs these checks on any NBA or NFL slip for free, then loads it into FanDuel or BetMGM.
